Volunteers News Letter March/April 2007

News and Update

A big thank you to everyone who has helped over the passed few months; the Town is looking much better thanks to your efforts.

Since my last letter we have cleared the entrance to North Meadow, planted 50 native hedge plants along the rugby field car park, and the biggest and most rewarding task was planting 10 large trees at the eastern entrance to the Town ( my apologies for the photographer, but we did get a good report in the paper).

In February Anita, Bob, and Mike Hatton attended the National finalist seminar at Stevenage ; we had a full day of talks about how to make our Town look its best, and how to get the community involved. One scheme we are working on is the Neighbourhood Awards; where small local groups who want to make their area look better set up a group and work towards a goal. It’s free to register and non competitive. If you want to know more look on www.rhs.org.uk  or give me a call Anita: 01793 751403. We need about 6 of these schemes up and running by late spring. The Cricklade Leisure Centre have formed our first Neighbourhood award scheme; a group of volunteers are planting up tubs and baskets, keeping the weeds at bay and pruning shrubs, they are also litter picking and removing graffiti. I have also passed on the scheme details to the residents group on Parsonage Farm Close; they will be planting 3 trees at the end of March, and are planning to create a raised flower bed at the entrance to Parsonage.

St Sampson’s junior school and the Smart Zone after school club, are also planting trees donated by the Woodland Trust, I have managed to recycle the stakes and protective tubes from the Millennium wood for the schools trees. They have lots of ideas for gardening projects and would like to get their school garden club running again. Can anyone spare 1 hour a week either after school or at lunch time to get this group active again? Give me a call if you would like to know more details. 01793 751403.

Sponsorship: Hannick Homes have promised us £500 and I have received donations from individuals as well as the Welcome Club and the Garden club totaling £212, this will go towards the troughs for St Mary’s and the Town Hall wall planters.
